What is WMU?
In 1888, a handful of women dedicated to the cause of missions founded Woman's Missionary Union. Since then, WMU has become the largest Protestant missions organization for women in the world, with a membership of approximately 1 million. The basic purpose of WMU is to promote and support missions.
How is the WMU purpose carried ?
WMU does four kinds of work to fulfill its purpose. These four kinds of work are called "Tasks" - church tasks assigned to WMU.
- Teach Missions - When missions is taught and learned, a change takes place in the learner. The teaching of missions leads to action - involvement in missions through mission action, personal witnessing, and mission support.
- Engage in Mission Action and Personal Witnessing - Teaches to reach beyond the church family to help people of special need or circumstances and to tell them about a Saviour who loves them!
- Support Missions - This puts people in partnership with missionaries by praying, giving, proving for missionaries, emphasizing the need for involvement in mission service, and involvement in mission service.
- Interpret and undergird the work of the church and the Southern Baptist Convention. - Since 1888, WMU has been committed to support for both the church and the denomination.
If you are interested in being a part of missions and WMU, please contact Frances Gilcrease at 932-9945. Our next meeting will be held at the church in the Fellowship Hall on Dec. 16.
